A recent council meeting in St. Stephen brought together community leaders and representatives to discuss a myriad of topics crucial to the growth and development of the municipal district. Held at the Garcelon Civic Centre, the meeting saw active participation from council members and stakeholders, shedding light on the progress and initiatives shaping the future of St. Stephen.

Director of Community Services Kevin Sumner provided updates on various community service projects. Sumner highlighted the successful lighting up of the iconic St. Stephen lighthouse in purple, symbolizing support for epilepsy awareness, and shared plans for an upcoming vendor market to fund improvements to the courtyard.

"We're dedicated to offering innovative services to benefit residents and visitors alike," said Sumner.

Jamie Barham introduced an exciting new ride-sharing service set to launch on May 1st in collaboration with a PEI-based company. The app-based service Kari aims to provide convenient door-to-door rides within town, with potential expansion to a wider area. Barham expressed optimism for the service's positive impact on St. Stephen, drawing parallels to the success of a similar rural service model in PEI.

"We aim to provide a convenient transportation solution catering to the diverse needs of our community," said Barham.

Financial updates were provided by Treasurer Tim Tozier. Notable figures included a surplus in the General Operating Fund and a deficit in the Utility Operating Fund, expected to shift to a surplus with upcoming water and sewer billings. Tozier's detailed account of the council's financial standing highlighted a strategic approach to funding community development projects.

"Our focus is on maintaining a balanced budget and strategic allocation of funds for community projects," said Tozier.

Council engaged in discussions regarding the resolution of the long-standing hotel land issue, recognizing the potential for unlocking opportunities in tourism and conference sectors. Despite temporary delays due to legal proceedings, there was an air of optimism for a swift resolution and positive outcomes in the near future.

"The recommendation that we try to buy the land back--I think that is a winner," said Councillor Marg Harding. "I think in order to move this town ahead, I have said this 10 times, we have to have a hotel."
