Regent Park TV News (audio): THE SDP COMMUNICATIONS WORKING GROUP

On today’s episode Radio Regent’s host David Wall presents interviews with working group members Ibrahim Afra, Denise Souveidan-o’Learty, and Adonis Huggins.

The goal of the Regent Park Social Development Plan (SDP) is to create an inclusive and cohesive Regent Park. The Regent Park SDP revolves around four major priority areas (Communication, Safety, Employment and Economic Development and Community Building) each led by a working group comprised of residents, agencies and grass roots groups. In this Regent Park TV episode, learn about the SDP Communications Working Group.

The Regent Park Social Development Plan (SDP) is a community-wide initiative that seeks to ensure that social inclusion and cohesion is at the heart of the revitalization of Regent Park.  To meet this goal, the work of the SDP is structured around four primary committees or working groups each consisting of Toronto Community Housing residents, market residents, grassroots groups and service providers.

Considered among the lowest income neighborhoods in Toronto, antidotal evidence suggests that many Regent Park households are struggling with employment barriers related to language, lack of skills, lack of accreditation, mental health, Islamophobia, systemic racism and more.

The Communications Working Group three main goals in the coming year include the creation of a communications platform in the form of a community app, the Regent Park News Letter, which is a print news source for the community, and the third tool is to elevate Regent Park TV as the neighbourhood source for information via its YouTube channel, and through its dedicated channel on Roger Cable for those subscribers that have Rogers. RPTV is currently working on having Bell and Beanfiled carry that channel through networks in all TCHC buildings.

Access to information is one the key components of the Social Development Plan (SPD), people need to know what is going on in the community, what has happen in the past, and how to get involved. Consolidated these channels of communication (the app, the newsletter, and RPTV news) ties directly into amplifying the work of the Social Development Plan (SPD), which in turn maintains the overall integrity of the Regent Park community as it moves through the revitalization and beyond.
