Curling BC Funding New Youth Program in Ashcroft

The Ashcroft Curling club is very excited about teaching youth how to curl this winter season with the hope that by introducing kids to the sport that they will continue on into the next season. Donna Monford is the Program Director and says that curling is a wonderful way to meet people, to exercise and to have fun in the winter.

“Curling BC is encouraging young people and supporting clubs by paying for registration. It’s a one-time thing...we’re hoping for the interest [to continue] next year that we can actually start a junior program.” She said.

Kylie Franklin is a local parent to a couple of young curlers and loves the opportunity to show her kids a new sport.

“It’s just it’s great for them to be able to get out... in our small area. Sometimes it’s hard to find those things... a free program where they can come with their friends. I just thought absolutely my boys were like: ' I don’t think I like curling so we’re not gonna go', and I was like 'We’re gonna try it once in a week'.  Now it's a different tune: 'I can’t wait to go back to curling'", so say each of her boys.  Franklin is very happy about that.

The program is taught by seniors which gives an opportunity for the youth to learn and connect with their elders. The program received $2000 in grant funding and has had just under 30 young students working with the coaches.

“It’s a fun sport and it’s typically an expensive sport and it’s something that you can carry on into adulthood.” Monford added.

The program runs every Tuesday night at the Ashcroft Curling Club.
