Empowering Afghan Women: A Migrant's Journey to Canada

Host, Shazieh Safi, sits down with a young Afghan woman named Sadaf Johari, a recent immigrant to Canada. Sadaf was a political and social activist in Afghanistan, particularly advocating for women's rights under the Taliban government. She fought for women's education and freedom from the veil in Afghanistan but believed her efforts there were futile. By migrating to Canada and settling in Vancouver, Sadaf aims to continue being a voice for Afghan women, as he believes that Canada, with its freedom of expression, offers greater opportunities for women.

Sadaf speaks about the immigrant experience of suddenly losing her entire life and having to start anew. She emphasizes that Afghan women are resilient and resourceful, as they continue to utilize Canada's facilities to build a new life. Many Afghan immigrants, she notes, did not wish to leave their country but were compelled to do so. She views Canada and its people as highly understanding and encourages immigrants to seek help and learn from the community.

Sadaf discusses the opportunities and challenges of life in Canada, citing language barriers and finding employment as significant challenges. However, she believes that all immigrants faced similar circumstances and endured hardships upon arrival. On the topic of depression among immigrants, Safada doesn't believe that she has experienced this and has instead found herself well-adapted to migration.

Sadaf is intent on continuing her social activities in Canada, leveraging the civil opportunities of the country to empower Afghan women who face cultural and social constraints.
